Direct Roaming Number System (DRNS)

Save money for your inbound roamers and attract them away from your competitors

UltraComp DRNS

Attract roamers by giving them free reception of local calls AND international calls (no roaming charges) when they use your network.

Provides “Welcome SMS” to all roamers including partners with SMS barring (no HLR interrogation needed).

Business case

If you are a GSM operator in a country with several competitors, you want to attract and keep inbound roamers in your network for the duration of their stay, as it brings large revenues from their outbound calls.

You will also want to have a “Welcome SMS” when they first register in your network or to provide information on your services. You will use the “Welcome SMS” to inform them on how to use the “Direct Roaming Number System” to avoid roaming charges on inbound calls.

Roamers: how to use this service

The inbound roamer receives a “Welcome SMS”: “Welcome to our network, keep selecting us, set manually our network as selected, and you will not be charged for receiving local calls, international calls or from home. In order to avoid these charges tell your calling parties to call +852 999 then your number 33 612345689 instead of just your number”.

The inbound roamer redirects all calls to voice mail in his Home network and records a message “I am in Hong-Kong until next Saturday. Please call +852 999 33 612345689” Once a roamer has left your network, if any call is received to his Direct Roaming Number, the Voice Response Unit will say “852 999 336123456789 has left our network. Please call his usual number 336123456789.”

Benefits
  • Inbound roamers avoid charges when they receive calls -not only local calls (as with other systems) but also international inbound calls, so it is a key advantage inciting them to select and keep your network.
  • Simple: as their Direct Roaming Number is always the same when they plan a trip to your country, they can give it ahead of time to their family and work colleagues. They can also redirect to voice mail before they leave.
  • Does not use “Optimal Routing” which could displease his Home network, your GSM roaming partner.
  • No decrease of the revenue for terminating calls which could be paid to you by the fixed line network.
  • Automatic detection of the roamer leaving your network.
DRNS installation and architecture
  • Choose an available range of numbers (such as CC = 852, NDC = 999) for the service.
  • Ask all your roaming partners to include 852 999 followed by up to 13 digits in the list of your MSISDNs
  • Connect DRNS to your GMSC (1 SS7 link enough with SCCP and ISUP signalling)
  • Connect DNRS with a 16 SS7 link capable read-only probe on your international links
  • Uses one Global Title and Point Code that you assign. DRNS is like an other special HLR in your network
  • Assign a telephone number to the VRU for the “Has left our network” message.
  • Creates DRNS as HLR for all numbers 852 999 in your GMSC
